From Munich we took a two hour train to Salzburg, Austria for the day. As a tip, make sure to leave early on this day trip. Jet lag got the best of us, so we started the day late. We were still able to enjoy the city for five hours before the last train back to Munich left at 20:00, but more time to exploring this enchanting city would have been nice. Tip number two, European trains leave right on time, so show up to the station early. We were on board in plenty of time, but saw quite a few people running as the train was leaving.
After arriving, we took a short walk to the Mirabell Palace. The palace was built around 1606 and was original used as a pleasure palace by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau. However, this location is best know for being part of the set of The Sound of Music, so of course Jenny had fun singing “do re mi” on the gate steps...and then we saw the no preforming sign. You can take a tour of the palace, but with our limited time we decided to just walk through & enjoy the gardens.
A few block away from the palace was the Makartsteg Footbridge which crosses over the Salzach river and links the old city & new city. The bridge is also known as the Love Locks Bridge because couples have lined the rails with personalized locks to devote their eternal devotion to one another.
After crossing over the Makartsteg Footbridge, we found ourselves in the Altstadt neighborhood. Filled with shops, cafes and Christmas markets, this area was relaxing to walk around in.
Overall, a trip Salzburg is a must if you have the opportunity. If you do a day trip, just make sure to give yourself enough time to appreciate and enjoy this wonderful city.
